The iO mini is the most compact device in Multitel’s  iO Platform family, engineered to fit inside space-constrained outside plant (OSP) cabinets and smaller ISP facilities. It delivers the core functionalities of the iO Gateway : secure remote access, protocol conversion, IP address management, and cybersecurity. In a reduced form factor for environments where rack space is limited.

The iO mini connects to UPS, DC power systems, energy meters, HVAC, generators, ATS, fuel systems, battery management systems, and other critical equipment. It consolidates their data behind a single secure IP endpoint for the NOC. It supports Modbus RTU/TCP, MQTT, and SNMP v1/v2c/v3, providing multi-protocol remote visibility without requiring a full-scale RTU deployment.

For sites that also require basic automated control, the iO mini pairs with the SMX-mini expansion module. This adds fan on/off control, HVAC lead/lag logic, and equipment switching. It offers a cost-effective alternative to upgrading to an IO Supervisor.

Cybersecurity

The compact form factor of the iO mini does not compromise on security. It uses the same cybersecurity framework as the iO Gateway and iO Supervisor: SNMPv3 authentication and encryption, LDAP-based user identity validation, and physical network segmentation between the Local Area Network (LAN) and customer-facing networks. Also, the iO mini’s secure HTTPS passthrough provides direct access to the web interface of any connected smart device.

Protocol conversion: compact Modbus to SNMP

The iO mini queries Modbus RTU devices (genset controllers, UPS systems, power meters, HVAC controllers) and publishes their data as SNMP traps directly to the NOC. It supports Modbus RTU in controller/responder configuration, Modbus TCP, MQTT, and SNMP v1/v2c/v3 with trap forwarding, making it compatible with any Modbus, MQTT, or SNMP device.

For connectivity, it provides 2x Ethernet ports and 2x RS-485 serial ports, with LDAP support for centralized authentication. See technical details on Modbus to SNMP protocol conversion.

IP Address Management

The iO mini aggregates all power and cooling device connections behind a single IP endpoint, eliminating the proliferation of static IP addresses across the network. This frees addresses for revenue-generating network and IT equipment. It removes dependency on IT staff for IP assignment requests. A centralized repository supports asset tracking and remote access.

Lithium Battery Integration / Battery Management System (BMS)

The iO mini integrates with any embedded Battery Management System (BMS) using industry-standard Modbus protocols and supports up to 512 lithium battery modules. It delivers real-time battery monitoring, including state of charge, state of health, runtime estimates, and environmental conditions. In addition to integrating with existing BMS controllers, the iO mini providies centralized monitoring, control, alarming, and reporting for critical battery assets. Seamless integration with FIRMSuite, Atlas, Cacti, Nagios, DCIM, and other network management systems enables efficient lithium battery management and enhanced operational reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions About the iO mini

Both devices share the same protocol conversion, cybersecurity, and IP address management capabilities. The iO mini is the more compact option, engineered for OSP cabinets and smaller ISP sites. The iO Gateway is designed for larger ISP facilities with more complex data needs. Both support the same qualified device list and the same SNMP/Modbus communication stack.

Yes. The SMX-mini expansion module adds automated fan on/off control, HVAC lead/lag logic, and equipment switching to the iO mini, at a fraction of the cost of upgrading to an iO Supervisor. This makes the iO mini + SMX-mini combination suited to remote cabinets that need basic control alongside monitoring.

The iO mini operates from -40°C to 65°C and 5% to 90% RH non-condensing, making it suitable for uncontrolled environments such as roadside cabinets, OSP shelters, and remote enclosures. Its compact form factor is designed for space-constrained installations.

The iO mini supports the same qualified device list as the iO Gateway, including equipment from ABB, Vertiv, Schneider, Cummins, Caterpillar, Kohler, ASCO, Delta, Enersys, and others. For unlisted devices, configuration requires only basic Modbus RTU/TCP knowledge.
